From Harvest Right to Xiros Mikro: Why Dr. Feis Chooses Confidence

Interview with Feisal, better known as Dr. Feis from Oil Hunters

Feisal, better known as Dr. Feis from Oil Hunters, is a renowned hash maker based in Spain. In his field, he is known for quality, experience and a sharp eye for detail.

Over the years, he has worked extensively with Harvest Right freeze dryers. That experience taught him a great deal about freeze-drying, but also showed him the limits of simpler machines when working with valuable products.

When every batch matters, reliability becomes more than a technical detail. Vacuum performance, process control, maintenance, spare parts and support can all have a direct impact on the final result.

After moving to the Xiros Mikro from Holland Green Science, Feisal quickly noticed the difference: more control, more confidence, better support and, most importantly, less risk when a valuable product is inside the machine.

With the arrival of the new Xiros Mikro V1.12 and GEN2 machines in 2025, he became even more enthusiastic. The new generation brought several important upgrades, including a vacuum test before the process starts, more programmable drying programmes, the option to give programmes their own names, adhesive-free shelf heating, a wider temperature range and even more control over the freeze-drying process.

In this interview, Feisal explains why he moved from Harvest Right to Xiros Mikro, what makes the new generation different and why he now recommends and sells Xiros Mikro machines himself.

Who Is Dr. Feis from Oil Hunters?

“My name is Feisal, but many people know me as Dr. Feis from Oil Hunters. I have been working for years with high-quality products and processes where every detail matters.

For me, everything starts with control. Every step in the process has to be right. If you have already put a lot of time, skill and value into a product, you do not want the final step to damage it.”

Why Is Freeze-Drying Important for Hash Makers and Extract Makers?

“Freeze-drying is important because it allows you to remove moisture in a controlled way, while helping to preserve the quality, colour and structure of the product.

For hash makers and extract makers, that is essential. The product going into the freeze dryer is often already the result of a lot of work. The freeze dryer should protect that work.

A good freeze dryer should not simply dry. It should dry with control.”

What Do You Look for in a Good Freeze Dryer?

“For me, the most important things are reliability, control and support.

A freeze dryer has to work in a stable way. It has to hold vacuum properly. It has to make processes repeatable. And if something happens, I want proper support.

When the product is valuable, you do not want to hope that everything goes well. You want confidence.”

You Have Worked a Lot with Harvest Right Machines. How Do You Look Back on That?

“Harvest Right was a familiar starting point for me. I worked with those machines a lot, and I learned a lot from them.

But after some time, you start to see the limitations more clearly. Especially when you run more often and work with more valuable batches. Vacuum issues, faults, oil maintenance, spare parts and support become much more important.

A problem can sometimes be fixed, but the damage to a batch may already have happened. That is the real point. If your product has real value, you do not want to discover afterwards that something was wrong.”

What Are Common Problems with Simpler Freeze Dryers?

“Many problems come down to vacuum, maintenance and limited process control.

If the door does not close properly, if the door seal is not seated correctly, or if there is a leak somewhere in the system, the vacuum may not build properly or stay stable. Then the process does not run as intended.

With oil pumps, contaminated oil can also become a problem. If the oil is not replaced in time, the pump may no longer reach the vacuum depth you need. Sometimes oil may need to be changed after just one freeze-drying run. If you underestimate that, it can affect the entire cycle.

Then there is heat. Some machines dry more aggressively than you would want. The product can come out darker, drier or less clean than it went in.”

You Mentioned That the Xiros Mikro Cools Around Five Times Faster Than a Standard “Pharmaceutical” Freeze Dryer. Why Does That Matter So Much in Real Production?

“For me, this is one of the biggest advantages of the Xiros Mikro.

In Morocco, ambient conditions can be challenging. When the room temperature rises above around 28°C, many standard ‘pharmaceutical’ freeze dryers start to struggle. I have worked with pharmaceutical, scientific and home laboratory freeze dryers from different manufacturers, and this is a common limitation.

The refrigeration system often needs a very long time to bring the chamber down to the required freezing temperature. In some cases, I have had to wait more than eight hours before the machine was cold enough to even start the freeze-drying process.

With the Xiros Mikro, that is completely different. In my experience, it reaches the required temperature in around one hour, even in demanding conditions. That means it can cool around five times faster than a standard ‘pharmaceutical’ freeze dryer.

This makes a huge difference in real-world production.

A full drying cycle with the Xiros Mikro can be completed in approximately 12 hours, while other machines may already lose four to eight hours, or even longer in warm conditions, just getting ready to start.

For me, that means shorter turnaround times, higher productivity and much more reliable planning. Especially in warm climates, cooling performance is not just a technical detail. It directly affects how much you can produce, how quickly you can work and how dependable the machine is.

That is why the Xiros Mikro is the better choice for my work. It does not just freeze-dry well. It is ready to work when I need it to work.”

How Can You Tell If a Freeze-Drying Process Has Gone Wrong?

“You can often see it straight away.

If a product comes out darker than it went in, that can point to too much heat, oxidation or a drying process that was too aggressive. With smooth or liquid products, you can sometimes see it on the surface. A tray that should dry flat and clean should come out looking smooth. If you see disturbances, craters or traces of bubbles, something went wrong during the process.

Those are signs that the product was not dried gently and under proper control. If you have done everything right before that step, it is very frustrating to lose quality during freeze-drying.”

Why Is Good Vacuum So Important in Freeze-Drying?

“Vacuum is one of the most important parts of freeze-drying.

The product must be completely frozen before vacuum is applied. That is the basis of freeze-drying. If the product is not properly frozen and vacuum is applied, the water can start to boil. That can damage the product before it has had the chance to dry correctly.

That is why you want to know that the machine is ready before you start the cycle. Do not guess. Check first, then run.”

Why Is the Vacuum Test on the New Xiros Mikro So Important?

“The vacuum test is one of the major advantages of the new Xiros Mikro V1.12 and GEN2 generation.

The machine can check the vacuum system before the cycle starts. That gives a lot of confidence. You know whether the door is closing properly, whether the seal is in place and whether the system is ready to build vacuum.

With many standard processes, you only notice a vacuum issue later. By then, your product is already in the cycle and the problem may already be causing damage. With the vacuum test, you do not start blind.”

What Makes the Xiros Mikro Different from Harvest Right?

“For me, the Xiros Mikro feels like a machine from a different category.

The difference is in the control, build quality, reliability and support. The Xiros Mikro is made for people who take their process seriously.

With Harvest Right, I had to deal more often with faults, vacuum issues, oil maintenance, or finding parts and support. Because Harvest Right is based in America, support from Europe is not always simple.

With Holland Green Science, support is much closer. That gives confidence.”

What Is Better About the New Xiros Mikro V1.12 and GEN2 Machines?

“The new generation is a big step forward.

The vacuum test before the start is an important improvement. The extra programming options are also very strong. You can save more programmes and give those programmes their own names. That may sound like a small detail, but in daily use it makes the machine much clearer and safer to work with.

If you run different products or different processes, you do not want to search through unclear settings. You want to choose a clear programme with a name that fits the application. That makes the process faster, safer and more repeatable.”

Why Are Programmable Drying Programmes Important?

“If you get a good result, you want to be able to repeat it.

With programmable drying programmes, you can save settings and use them again. That makes the process more consistent. Especially when you work with different products, that is very valuable.

You do not have to start from zero every time. You build knowledge into the machine. That makes freeze-drying much more professional.”

Why Is It Useful That Programmes Can Have Their Own Names?

“It makes daily work much easier.

If you have several recipes or products, you want to see quickly which programme you need. A programme with a clear name helps prevent mistakes.

That is especially useful if you run regularly, process different products or work with more than one person. It sounds simple, but in real use it makes a big difference.”

Why Is Adhesive-Free Shelf Heating an Important Upgrade?

“That is a very important point for me.

In the new Xiros Mikro generation, adhesive is no longer used for the heating mats. That means there is no risk of smell or flavour influence from adhesive materials.

If you work with products where aroma, flavour and purity matter, you do not want any material inside the machine that could influence the product. For me, this is how a good freeze dryer should be built: clean, well thought-out and focused on product quality.”

Why Does a Wider Temperature Range Matter in Freeze-Drying?

“A wider temperature range gives you more freedom in the process.

With stronger cooling performance and a higher shelf-heating range, you get more room to build a dynamic programme. You can adjust the process more precisely to the product.

Not every product needs the same process. Some products need a very careful approach. Others can be treated differently. The more control you have over temperature and time, the better you can build a programme that fits the product.”

What Do You Think of AutoDry on the Xiros Mikro GEN2?

“I personally do not use it that much, but AutoDry makes the process easier, especially if you want more confidence in the drying result.

For me, it is important that a machine can help, but that the user still has control. The Xiros Mikro gives that combination. You can use smart functions, but you can also create and refine your own programmes.

That makes the machine strong for beginners and experienced users.”

How Important Is a Good Vacuum Pump for a Freeze Dryer?

“The pump is very important. Without a good pump, you do not get good vacuum.

With an oil pump, you have to pay attention. Oil can become contaminated by moisture and use. If you do not replace the oil in time, the pump may perform less well. In the worst case, it can also damage the pump.

That is why maintenance should be taken seriously. A good pump and proper maintenance are a major part of a reliable freeze-drying process.”

What Is the Advantage of an Oil-Free Scroll Pump?

“An oil-free scroll pump makes the process calmer and easier.

You do not have to check or replace oil. You do not have contaminated oil affecting the vacuum. And the pump is much quieter than a traditional oil pump.

For me, that is a big advantage. Less maintenance, less risk and a better working environment. Especially if you run often or work with valuable products.”

Is Oil Contamination Still a Risk with the Xiros Mikro?

“The Xiros Mikro has been designed with this in mind. The machine has an extra valve that helps prevent oil from moving towards the machine.

But if you choose an oil-free scroll pump, you remove the oil issue from the process completely. Then you no longer have to think about changing oil, checking oil or wondering if the oil is still good enough.

That gives a lot of peace of mind.”

Why Is Support from the Netherlands an Advantage?

“Because when there is a problem, you want help quickly.

Holland Green Science is based in the Netherlands and also works with a dealer network. That makes a real difference. You are not just buying a machine; you are getting support from people who understand the process.

For me, that is very important. A freeze dryer is not a simple kitchen appliance. If something happens, you want to speak to someone who knows what they are talking about.”

Is the Xiros Mikro Only for Professionals?

“No. The Xiros Mikro is a professional machine, but that does not mean it is only for large companies.

I also recommend it to serious hobby users, small makers and private users who care about quality. If you have the possibility, go straight for the best.

You do not need to be a large company to have a valuable product. If the product matters to you, then the freeze-drying step should matter as well.”

Why Choose Xiros Mikro Instead of Starting with a Cheaper Freeze Dryer?

“Because starting cheaper can become more expensive later.

If a machine gives faults, if a batch fails, or if you spend a lot of time on maintenance and searching for solutions, you still pay for it. Just in a different way.

I understand that people look at the purchase price. But you should also look at confidence, support, maintenance and the risk of losing a batch. If the product inside the machine has value, you do not want unnecessary risk.”

Who Is the Xiros Mikro Best Suited For?

“For anyone who is serious about freeze-drying.

That can be a professional, but also a small producer, a maker or a passionate hobby user. It is not only about who you are. It is about what you expect from the final result.

If quality matters to you, if you want control and if you do not want to depend on luck, the Xiros Mikro is a very strong choice.”

Why Did You Start Recommending and Selling the Xiros Mikro Yourself?

“Because I believe in it myself.

I do not recommend machines easily. I have too much experience for that, and I know too well what can go wrong. The Xiros Mikro convinced me in real use.

With the new V1.12 and GEN2 generation, I became even more enthusiastic. The upgrades make the machine stronger, smarter and more reliable.

That is why I recommend it to people who ask me which freeze dryer they should buy. If possible, I say: go straight for the best choice. Then you do not have to start again later.”

What Would You Say to Someone Currently Using Harvest Right?

“I would say: look honestly at your own experience.

Are you happy, and does everything work well for your purpose? Then that is fine. But if you are dealing with vacuum issues, oil maintenance, noise, faults, batch loss or limited support, then it is time to look further.

For me, moving to Xiros Mikro was not a small upgrade. It was a step towards more confidence. And with the new generation, that choice has become even more logical.”

What Is the Biggest Difference Between Harvest Right and Xiros Mikro?

“Harvest Right feels to me like a machine many people start with. Xiros Mikro feels like a machine you can grow with.

The biggest difference is confidence. I have more confidence in the process, in the machine and in the support behind it.

And when the product you place in the machine has real value, confidence is exactly what you need.”

Why Do You Choose Holland Green Science?

“Because they do not only supply a machine. They understand the process.

The support is technical, practical and close by. From the Netherlands and through the dealer network. That makes a big difference for me.

I want to work with people who understand why quality matters. With Holland Green Science, I have that feeling.”

What Is Your Advice to People Choosing a Freeze Dryer?

“Do not only think about the price of the machine. Think about the product you put inside it.

If that product does not mean much to you, you may be willing to take more risk. But if you have already put a lot of effort into making something valuable, you do not want the final step to ruin it.

For me, the Xiros Mikro is the choice for people who care about confidence, quality and support. With the new V1.12 and GEN2 machines, that choice has become even stronger.”

Conclusion: Why Dr. Feis Chooses Xiros Mikro
